ORO, Glasgow
Hey, Foodwala’s… I was watching The Goldbergs on the idiot box and enjoying an 80’s trip down memory Ally…it was so good to hear Wham and George Micheals dulcet tones singing Everything she wants, and watching the amazing Ferris Bueller’s Day off, I think the best year for music was definitely 1988.
Feeling nostalgic I started to stream the seminal and sublime Purple Rain by Prince on Spotify, who incidentally then changed his name to “The Love Symbol” in a fit of creative tantrum with his record company wallas, this got me wondering how good the 80’s was, I remembered Marathon before it became Snickers and Datsun before it became Nissan and Opal Fruits who became Star Burst.
Rarri Foodwalee wanted to test her newly acquired Italian skills so we decided to take a trip down Kilmarnock Road and visit ORO, which translates as Gold, it too used to be called Bella Napoli. Everything was the same except Mr. Corolla one day took a notion that he wanted a name change and ORO was born…go figure.
ORO has changed the name but the decor is definitely Napoli Camorra Chic, even the Pizza Oven is Gold Leaf.
We kicked off the proceedings with a Focaccia with Rosemary and Sea Salt, the flatbread was stone baked in the Gold pizza oven and sea salt and the rosemary added the necessary sharpness to complement the Olive oil infused bread.
Mokee Foodwala opted for the Lobster Ravioli, the delicious yet delicate Lobster filled pillows of deliciousness were in a seafood consomme, the consomme was delicate and light. I would have prefered a piece of warm flatbread to mop up the consomme.
The Tomato and Ricotta Ravioli was rustic in its simplicity, the ricotta and herb filling was light and creamy without it being heavy and the sweet cherry tomato sauce was slightly tart to offset the creaminess of the Ricotta.
The supposedly Spicy Chicken Penne was not as spicy we would have liked, the chilli oil was overpowered by the cream and the chicken was a wee bit stingy, however, the pasta was al dente which I liked.
In Conclusion, ORO was exactly what a neighbourhood Italian family friendly restaurant should be, the ingredients were fresh, the staff were polite and attentive and the eagle-eyed Mr Corolla made sure the whole operation ran like a Jose Carreras Opera.
Halal – Yes (chicken) however pork and alcohol served albeit segregated.
