Bosporus, Dubai
Hey Foodwala’s I am finally in Dubai… a city full of superlatives …the biggest this, the highest that, the deepest this the most expensive that and so on and so forth.
Dubai is Alfie Foodwla’s second home, it’s a city where the dynamism is its catalyst, the sheer pace and vigour of Dubai is breathtaking, it is a place that when you think you have seen it all but it reinvents itself.
I was last in Dubai a year ago and in space of twelve months the new fashion avenue has opened up, which is as you can imagine spectacular.
Furthermore, Dubai has reinvented the mall concept, with the opening of La Mer, a Mediterranian wharf themed outdoor Mall, it’s like Disneyland for shoppers and restaurants.
in addition to that Al, Seef has opened on the creek, this themed outdoor mall is styled as an Emirati pearl fishing village circa 1965. It is truly a sight to behold.
As Dubai now straddles East and the West, it has taken this mantle from Istanbul, Goblee Foodwala and Deebo Foodwala and I decided to celebrate this shift by eating some Turkish food.
We landed at the Bosporus Grill in Dubai Mall.
Wow Wow Wow…the freshly baked leavened flatbread was absurdly delicious, the leavening agents, yoghurt and buttermilk made the bread light yet soft.
playing support to the bread was a selection of fresh Turkish Mezze, olive salad, hummus, babaganoush, Teratur, Cacik, Moutabel and Semizotu.
The fresh hot bread was absolutely devine with the cold Mezze, The bread would magically appear just as we finished the last one.
The mixed grill was a meat lovers delight, grilled lamb chops, chicken wings, shish taouk, Adana kebab, iskender kebab all on a bed of zatter spiced buttered unleavened flatbread and accompanied with bulger rice.
We sat upon the mixed grill with extreme gusto, it was delicious and the Occucbasi grill was literally 4 feet away from us so it could not be any fresher.
Next up was the Iskender Pide, this is the Turkish take on pizza, but pizza does not get a look in, the flatbread was topped with fragrant mince and only then the grilled Iskender meat was added along with the yoghurt dressing…one word…yummy.
The nutty, buttery lamb fat seeped into the bread giving a simply irresistible flavour, the grilled meat had some burnt ends which gave a crispy dimension to the Pide.
To finish our meaty journey we opted for the king of Kebabs…the Adana Kebab, this was the real deal, the cubed lamb was indeed mixed with sheep tail fat (it’s not allowed in the UK) and then the chef minces the meat using a scimitar-like knife thus giving a coarse texture and then the spices and shallots are added.
The kebab was grilled to a point so the kebab was still moist and the juice of the kebab was soaking the flatbread…delicious
As life revolves around the mall in Dubai due to the unforgiving climate, it only stands to reason that gourmet restaurants ply their trade with fast food under the one roof, and we are better off for that.
