Serenity Now, Glasgow
Hey, Foodwala’s… Goblee Foodwala, the grand master of the Dubai Chapter of Alfie Foodwala is in sun-baked Glasgow and he has just dropped a bombshell
He has grandly announced that he is now officially a VEGAN…That’s right, you heard it right, he is giving up meat and becoming a meat celibate, he is becoming a man of the plant-based cloth.
What has brought this on…some say its onset of the early mid-life crisis, others say he is becoming a hipster monk… all I can say is we need to rescue him from the dark side.
I started to research this vegan lifestyle and found out some startling results about this vegan phenomena, apparently, Glasgow is the vegan capital of the UK!
We decided to go for a vegan breakfast and Serenity Now is a 100% vegan cafe 100 yards from Alfie Foodwala towers.
I was not sure what I was expecting in a vegan cafe, possibly some hipster monks gliding serenely from table to table giving out glad tidings or maybe pictures of happy cows and chickens looking benevolently down at the great carnivore masses.
but what we found was an innocuous cafe with no hipster monks and nothing to suggest it was a meat-free zone
We kicked off the proceedings with a vegan Mexican classic the Huevos Rancheros, toasted tortilla topped with chipotle sauce, refried beans, avocado, tofu southwest scramble and jalapenos.
we ordered and then we waited…and waited…. and waited
We waited for 45 minutes for the food to be served, the staff worked at a glacial pace, at one point I thought they had started to grow the avocados that were going to be served to us.
When the food did come it was certainly delicious the tofu scramble was light and tasty and the refried beans and the chipotle sauce added a spicy dimension to the Mexican staple.
next up was the Tex Mex classic, the Southwest Scramble, tofu scramble with onions, peppers, refried beans, avocado and Kale, the resulting dish was again tasty and we could taste the constituent elements of the dish with nothing overpowering.
We finished off our vegan adventure with an Acai bowl, Acai blended with banana, granola and almond milk, and a yummy mango ice lolly on the side!
In conclusion, The menu in Serenity Now was certainly imaginative and the ingredients were again well sourced, and executed flair and style, did I miss the meat? NO
But it was let down by the glacial service and the surly staff, maybe if you work in a vegan hipster cafe it is not the done thing to smile at the customers.
But it did give us time to debate the giving up meat thing, I personally feel that an animal has a raison d’être, that we honour the animal by eating it and celebrating what it provides us.
I also agree that the animal should be reared in a humane and natural way and when it is time for it to be killed, it should be done with as little pain and suffering as possible.
